I have been absolutely hag-ridden with ambition. If I could wish to have anything in the world it would be to be free of ambition.
For us to maintain our way of living, we must tell lies to each other and especially to ourselves. The lies are necessary because, without them, many deplorable acts would become impossibilities.
In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something else.
