John Brown first swam into my vision in the 1960s when I was a political activist in the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement at Chapel Hill, where I went to university.
I get sent a lot of scripts which feature him as a kind of all-purpose Victorian literary character and really understand little, if anything, about him, his life or his books.
I was very new to working in front of the camera when I started shooting 'Gatsby,' so I set myself the mission of gleaning as much information as possible out of the much more experienced actors. The cast was astoundingly talented.
