So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level. We'll create a world for people and then later present a narrative in that world.
At the end of the day, a television, a computer, or a smart phone is just a device through which one can access content. The content itself is what matters, not the device.
The ideal, it seems to me, is to show things happening and allow the reader to decide what they mean.
