It's always a Catch-22 situation. They hate you if you're the same, and they hate you if you're different.
I've always wanted to be my own person and stand by the things I believe in and I thought I might lose that independence if I ran for political office.
But I must own that I also felt stirred by an unselfish desire to voice all the joys and sorrows, the hopes and ambitions, of the American Negro, in classic musical form.
